Darby Dog Derby

This weekend The pups and I went down to the Darby Dog Derby. I borrowed Tank from Brandi, and ran just Thor, Shilah and Tank in the 4-dog category. On the first day we ran our 5 mile race in 34.51 minutes and on the second day, ran it in 31 minutes. We got second place - though there was only one other musher! (their dogs are REALLY fast and usually win though) My team did awesome and pulled hard and fast both days.

On Sunday, there was the Pee Wee race where we lend kids a dog sled and dog. Then we send them down the trail about 100 yards, they get into the basket, and a musher drives them back down. I brought Thor for the Pee Wee race and he got the first four fastest times! All of the kids were saying they wanted to be pulled by Thor because he was so fast. And lots of mushers were commenting on how good of a dog he is. That's my man! :)

The dogs and I had SO much fun! I got to see fellow mushers I don't get to see very often there. The pups did awesome and I couldn't have asked more of them. :) Pictures are (hopefully) soon to come!

  1. How fun to run across your blog and web site! As a fellow dog enthusiast, Siberian mama, and blogger of similar title, it is a real treat to see one so young so interested in mushing. I was also homeschooled as a youngster and enjoyed reading about all of your interests. :)

I look forward to those pictures. :)

  2. Thanks for being interested in my blog! :) How many Sibes do you have?

I'm still working on the pictures (copyright stuff)... but here's a link to the photographer that took pictures of the race:

  3. I love your new banner!

We only have one Husky right now-- Esme, 6 months old.

She's a little more "filled out" than that now. We have had Siberians my whole life. It's always been my mom's dream to have a sled team. Hasn't quite happened yet, but we still enjoy the breed. We had one named Shilah even! He was a silly boy.

I've been very interested in skijoring since I first leaned about it. It's hard to find interest in sledding, carting, etc. in our area. It's always at least a couple hours drive to find any dog-related events.

Thanks for sharing the photos! How many inches/feet of snow have you already had this winter?

  4. Esme is so cute! I bet she will be a very pretty adult. It's so crazy that we have an almost identical name for our kennels! :)

Yes, that's one of the drawbacks of dog sledding (or skijouring) is having to drive at least an hour+ to get to events (and sometimes just to get to decent training trails). Luckily, there are lots of mushers where we live. There is even a girl, Aiyana Ferraro, who ran the Jr. Iditarod last year and is in our mushing group!

You should get into skijouring! It's super fun. Just about anyone can do it that know how to xc ski, and has a dog that will pull them.

Our snow is VERY pathetic this winter. The most we have had was about 5 inches. The temperature was even getting into the 40s today! Yuck! Hopefully we'll get more snow next winter! Do you get much snow?

  5. I'll pass the kind compliment onto Esme. :)

I don't actually have a kennel, just a blog by and for dog people. :)The name "Sixth Day"... well, kind of pops into the head of a Christian when thinking up a name for an animal related blog/website/kennel, doesn't it? :)

I bet picking Aiyana's brain about sledding is quite fun! She should write a book about her journey!

I don't know how to ski, so there could be a crux, but Esme will certainly pull! Our little Rat Terrier is a puller, too, but I doubt her 23 pounds could do much good for skijouring.

We are finally having a "good" as in "normal" winter this year. We have had around 13 or 14 inches so far this season. Lots of fun to play in! Our wind chills have been below zero for over a week. Brrrr! Hope you get some fresh snow to blaze trails through soon. :)

    1. I had always liked the name Sixth Day for a kennel. And once I actually GOT a kennel I decided to name it that (though technically 3 dogs aren't a kennel. haha!). like how it shows I am a Christian in a simple name. :)

It is really cool to talk to Aiyana about dog sledding! She has done so much and knows a lot. I learn something every time I talk to her.

If you don't know how to ski, you could always learn! It's not too hard. Also, you could get a kick sled (made for dogs to pull) or small dog sled. Though they are quite pricey. I got a dog sled for free and it still cost me $500 for all the gear!

That's nice that you have that much snow! I bet Esme really likes the cold weather too.

Warning! Once you get into dog sledding or skijouring you'll be hooked forever! Once you have one sled dog, your kennel always seems to get bigger and bigger. :)
